I've signed up and am really excited to be going, despite the fact that it is months from now.

Who has been? Any advice? Staying in the dorms vs a hotel nearby? Once there, is there any reason to have a car?
Have you loaded up on tools and tonewood there?

I'm closing in on finishing guitars #3 and #4 so it seems like a good time to soak up a lot of knowledge.

Advice for a newbie please.

I was there for Saturday last year and stayed in the hotel.
I'll be going again for sure!

It's way fun. Stay in the dorms. It's cheaper, thus freeing up more dough for wood from all the vendors you'll find there. The wood selection is incredible, and the prices are as good as you'll find outside of eBay. The difference is, you can trust these vendors.

Technically, the campus is "dry", but the security folks tend to look the other way just so long as you're not a raucous buffoon. Lots of folks outside in the evening, playing guitars and enjoying the odd adult beverage.

The food is cafeteria food, but I've certainly had worse. Basically, The symposium is 200 folks geeking out about guitars for 4 days.

Pretty much my idea of heaven.

See you there.

Steve

2007 was the last time I was able to go.

I love these get togethers but it is the evening get togethers where you get to learn a lot. Listening to Al Carruth talk about Stradivarious going to heaven was a great story.

I'm definitely going as well, I'll be bringing a bunch of necks, bridges etc. My first time at a guitar show so I'm pretty excited!

I missed the last couple of symposia using medical excuses, but this year I found myself on the presenters list, thanks to a little push from the one guy we can't refuse anything when he asks, Dan Erlewine.

Dan's the reason I went to my first ASIA thing (was it 1995?) and my first Tacoma GAL convention. In fact, without his example and encouragement, I doubt I'd have started FRETS.COM or any number of other "community" projects" I've gotten into.

So, I'll be there, you bet!

I've only been to one ASIA Symposium, and that was 10 years ago, but it sure was fun. Just watching Frank Ford do a refret on an old 00-15 up close and talking about it was worth the price of admission. So was a lecture by Ervin Somogyi, which prompted a very entertaining debate between him and Al Carruth, or listening to Linda Manzer talk about baritones, and Dan Erlewine, the Duke, and on and on. So thanks Frank (and Dan, for encouraging him) and all the rest, for your service to the community, as you can see, your audience is all over the world. Getting to know the people who's names you see on these forums, as well as lots of others, the guitars, the wood, the late night jams, the cafeteria conversations (but not the coffee!), they all make it worth it.

My first one was in 2003 in Westminster MD. Frank Ford left guite an impression on me. He was approachable and shared his knowledge . Thank you Frank. I got to be a presenter in 2005 and have been each year since. It is good to be able to give back. Can't wait for this year.

We will be there a day late. Need a day of rest after returning from Memphis Guitar Festival. Looking forward to it.

Less than 2 weeks away. I'm really excited about it. It will be my first.

I'd really like to do a Martin Factory tour on Wednesday before the Symposium starts. I'll be taking the bus to Stroudsburg from NYC so if anyone else is interested in going on the tour I'd love a ride to the factory. I'll buy you lunch!

Hey Linus, if you check the schedule, I think you'll see that there's nothing booked for Friday PM. A lot of folks take that opportunity to do the Martin tour. You may have a better chance of grabbing a lift then.

I've been twice, but may go again :-)

I'll be there as well. I'm presenting a talk on designing and making one's own wood (marquetry/intarsia) purflings, rosettes, back strips etc.

Frank, I think it was '95 (Burlington VT) that you last attended, looking forward to seeing you again.

I'm contemplating driving out on Saturday for the day to hang out with my good friend Sylvan Wells. It's been a year since he lived near me, so it would be good to catch up a bit. I've only been to one, back in (I think) '03 and got to meet some great folks in person, like Lance K, Brad Goodman, Uncle Bob Cefalu, John Hall, and a host of others. Looking forward to meeting Andy Birko face-to-face finally, if I can make it. Would love to see Bob Cefalu again as well. If y'all see a middle-aged, goofy looking, somewhat chubby blonde haired dude with John Lennon glasses, it could very well be me...
Oh, and if you get a chance to see Pat DiBurro's demonstration on replacing a top without sacrificing the bindings etc., do it! it's a Must See.

Last one I attended was Burlington, I think in '99. It is tempting, but might be a bit late to make arrangements.

I am counting the days. I will fly into Allentown and rent a car to drive up the rest of the way and Nazareth PA is right on the path. Can't resist another Martin tour and am planning on paying for the behind the scenes tour. Too many years since my last ASIA. After building 10-12 now, I am really ready to learn. I'll be in a the Hawaiian shirt. Or one of the other guys in Hawaiian shirts. ;-)
